Joseph "Joey" Edward Malcolm Jr., 9, was discovered in a small pond near Vaux and Hickory drives in New Britain Borough last Monday, June 19, Daily Voice reported. The county Coroner's Office ruled later that week that he had died in an accidental drowning

In the days since, area residents have raised a staggering $25,000 through a GoFundMe page organized by Joey's aunt and uncle, Nicole and Tom Malcolm.

"While we have been able to cover all the funeral costs, there have been many people expressing a genuine concern and desire to give to help Joe (Malcolm) at this heartbreaking time," they wrote, referring to the boy's father.

"Joe is a full-time single father raising and sole financial supporter for his two boys," Tom and Nicole said. "Because of the outpouring of people wanting to donate, we would like to give the community an outlet to donate to Joe."

In addition to his father, Joey leaves behind his mother, Lisa Furness-Malcolm, brothers Connor, Aiden, and Brody, and his sister Taylor, according to his obituary

Joey was an athlete who played soccer with Pennsylvania Rush and liked to play basketball, fish with his siblings, sing, dance, and build with Lego, family members wrote

"He was only 9 years old," Tom and Nicole wrote. "Words cannot describe the pain our family is going through."
